Our Mission: Caregivers

Why Our Work Matters for Caregivers
Caregivers are often the backbone of a Warrior’s healing journey — yet they frequently carry that responsibility alone. Many experience, emotional exhaustion, secondary trauma, loss of identity or independence, stress or strained relationships, and isolation from friends and community.
WACU was created to ensure that caregivers receive the support and care they deserve, not just the Warrior. When caregivers are supported, families are stronger, and Warriors are more likely to heal and thrive.
What We
Offer
At Warriors and Caregivers United, we recognize that the challenges faced by Warriors often extend deeply into the lives of those who support them. Caregivers carry emotional, mental, and sometimes physical burdens that are frequently unseen, unacknowledged, or misunderstood.
WACU exists to support, connect, and uplift caregivers by offering community, education, peer support, and a safe environment where they can share honestly, recharge, and build strength through connection with others who understand.
Caregivers of Warriors from all eras of service are welcomed — whether your Warrior served in Vietnam, Korea, Desert Storm, OEF/OIF/OND, or is currently serving.
01
Peer Support & Mentor Connections
WACU pairs caregivers with other experienced caregivers who understand the emotional toll of supporting a Warrior with visible or invisible wounds.
These relationships offer:
-
Confidential conversations
-
Shared experience and understanding
-
Long-term support without judgment
Caregiver mentors help others navigate stress, burnout, secondary trauma, and the constant balancing act of caregiving and personal life.
03
Education & Wellness Workshops
WACU provides practical workshop resources that address the unique challenges of caregiving, including:
-
Stress and burnout management
-
Healthy communication strategies
-
Emotional self-care and boundaries
-
Understanding PTSD and Warrior experiences
-
Strengthening family resilience
These workshops empower caregivers with tools, knowledge, and confidence to care for themselves as well as their Warrior.
05
Community and Long-Term Connection
Just like Warriors, caregivers face the danger of social isolation. WACU creates a lasting network of connection, allowing caregivers to:
-
Build new friendships
-
Develop mutual support
-
Stay engaged through ongoing events and mentorship
-
Grow a community that extends beyond any single program
This sustained involvement helps caregivers regain balance and prevents long-term burnout.
02
Caregiver-Focused Events and Community Gatherings
WACU hosts events designed specifically for caregivers, giving them space to breathe, connect, and enjoy time away from daily responsibilities. These may include:
-
Caregiver meetups
-
Restorative social events
-
Community-building activities
These gatherings help caregivers escape isolation and form friendships with others who truly understand their journey.
04
A Safe, Nonjudgmental Space for Emotional Support
Caregivers often feel pressure to “stay strong,” leaving little room to express their own emotions.
WACU offers a safe, private environment where caregivers can:
-
Speak openly without fear or guilt
-
Share frustrations and challenges
-
Receive empathy from peers
-
Rebuild personal emotional resilience
This nonclinical, peer-led approach helps caregivers feel seen, heard, and supported.
